As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is celebrated for its lush mangroves, vibrant coral reefs, and a diverse array of wildlife, from manatees to sea turtles. According to the World Heritage Convention, Sian Ka'an means 'Origin of the Sky'. Located on the east coast of the Yucatán peninsula, this biosphere reserve contains tropical forests, mangroves and marshes, as well as a large marine section intersected by a barrier reef. But beneath this paradise lies a mounting crisis that threatens the health of its ecosystems and the communities that depend on it. But this beautiful protected area is faced with a dire plastic pollution problem.

A Pollution Hotspot in Paradise

The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve has become a pollution hotspot, with plastic waste accumulating on its shores at an alarming rate. This area sits near a whirlpool-like ocean current, which traps floating debris and brings it to the reserve’s pristine beaches. Much of this garbage originates from cruise ships offshore and upstream pollution carried by rivers, creating an overwhelming influx of waste that the area cannot naturally handle.
